    Regarding the discussion about how Apple II graphics works, this is exactly what I had to properly understand just recently when porting Stunt Car Racer to the platform. I wrote up an article about the technical aspects of the port that starts with a short primer on how the Apple II achieved colour graphics via NTSC artifacting.
