First of all the game really expects you to read the manual… in fact, it has a step by step discription of the first few rooms you move through with details about the game mechanics. Proper tutorial, eh?

The manual also has some crucial info not found inside the game, like how to level up and how magic works.

Secondly, you might have to do some config tweaks. To get the sound to work properly I had to set the sound device to sound blaster pro, the game doesn’t seem to understand partitioned harddrives so in order to get this to work I had to have the game on my actual c: partition.
To get the mouse to work correctly I had to up the sensitivity in dosbox to around 150 and, lastly, going into the config file in the installation folder and setting the joysticktype option to “none”.

Hope this helps some of you, and feel free to post other stuff if I’ve missed anything 🙂

I strongly also recommend one learns how to use the keyboard even though it’s playable fully by mouse.

I just tried the GOG version and the default sound appears to be using general midi for an MT-32 game. I’d definitely recommend sorting that out – I’m assuming most people on here will know their way around MT-32 emulation. This is one of the games that used some of the extra sounds on the CM-32 and later so you’re best off with that ROM set if you want to hear splashing water and the like.

I’ve never used the keyboard shortcuts on this and don’t even know what they are. I reckon you should be using the mouse for the real experience but I’d still play Dark Forces and the like with the default keyboard controls so maybe don’t listen to me.

I’m definitely playing using the mouse, the gameplay is so slow-paced anyways that I don’t find it much of a detriment…

On the other hand, https://github.com/JohnGlassmyer/UltimaHacks seems to be a good alternative? I’ll give that one a go now.

Edit: that mouselook + wsad controls is a lifesaver (for me, at least).
