While playing through the shareware again, I noticed a few differences with the last official DOS release, like missing switches. There was also a leak/release of some pre-release versions that were fun to check out, to see how they evolved from Wolf3D to the final product. Even if you had to backdate your computer to get them to run. 😉

What do folks think of the various official versions of Doom over the years? It’s been released on so many platforms, I’m curious where folks first played it and what’s the strangest way/place people have ever played it.

Any opinions on the unofficial ports?

Hey everyone, this is my first forum-post, hoping I don’t come accross as too annoying. 😉
Just a couple of years ago (roundabout 2021) I “treated” myself with a 3do / Panasonic FZ-10 from Japan.
Just gonna say: this was a weird rabbithole to get into. 🙂
Of course one of the first things I had to checkout was the Doom-Port and it was a wild ride…
First of all, the initial presentation is great, especially the music.
Just when you start the first Level, is where it starts to crumble.
How about a big screen-frame to keep a “good” framerate on the hardware?
The controls are also the worst, I’m not too sure if you can get a better exprerience with 3rd-Party Controllers.
For a kid playing Doom in the original Port on a 486 back in the day, I’m not so sure this Port would have done anything for me back then.
I attached some screenshots from my OBS-Records, if you want to see more I can provide more footage.
I’m exited to hear about many other wild Port-experiences of you all.
    Best regards from Germany

The PSX version of Doom was the favourite non-PC port at iD. It has some unique coloured lighting effects, and can now be played in modern PCs through a reverse engineered source port PsyDoom https://doomwiki.org/wiki/PsyDoom .

    I once played a … port??? … on the TI-83.
I mean, calling it a port is very generous. It barely passed for a stripped-down wolf3d clone with a doom reskin, but still hella impressive!

All these ports are well and good, but clearly the best version is Doom ported to Doom.

@drbockwurst have you tried this unofficial 3DO port?

Looks like they have at least made it playable.

I can’t quite remember the story but they ported DOOM to windows 95 (DOOM95) as a way to showcase direct X and get gamers taking windows 95 seriously as a gaming platform. This is actually the version/launcher I played back in the day. It enabled things like level selection and higher resolutions (though this was somewhat broken) but used the same WADs as the DOS version so I’m not sure you could call it a port. Overall I don’t really think it was a big improvement or anything and I think the DOS version is still the way people go if playing on an old system as things like gzdoom have rendered DOOM95 obsolete.

Not a port, but part of the DOOM universe is DOOM 64 on the Nintendo 64 which is actually just a different game entirely and a good one at that, only problem for me is I get quite motion sick when playing it.

And finally, there’s the PowerPoint port: https://youtu.be/YW0eJDLbZXY?si=sQgA76M4JZPkVPaW

Well, all source ports use the same WADs as the DOS version (that’s a prerequisite for copyright reasons). However, it’s true that some of them ship with additional WADs or PK3s containing new resources.

I prefer MBF in DOS, for the higher resolution and the limit removal.

Doom64 was eventually ported to PC, and then a remastered version was released.

The PowerPoint remake is awesome. It’s not really a port, but merely an interactive PowerPoint game using Doom assets. The amount of work the author has put into it is impressive.
