A quarter of a century ago I was playing the shareware version of Wacky Wheels, but I didn’t have enough tracks!

I ended up writing a couple of tools in Turbo Pascal, which allowed me to unpack and repack the wacky.dat file, and edit a few file formats. The map editor was barely usable, but let me redraw some of the shareware tracks into more intricate shapes. To then discover that the path that the computer players would follow was in yet another file whose format I had to decypher. Got there eventually, but never completed the editor.

I’ll attach here the source and DOS executable to unpack the game files though, in case anyone feels like digging deeper. Run “data -” (yes, that’s just a dash) to extract all files in a data subdirectory.

Happy to chat about file formats, albeit I might not remember much.

Wow, sounds like you were quite committed to making new maps for the game! I’m still making my way through the base game, but will check this out after.
