I’ve dug up a few reviews of Gateway 1 and 2. They are fairly complementary but do complain about text adventures being outdated particularly with the sequel. When one of the complaints from PC Format in a review of a text adventure is that there is too much text to read, you are clearly fighting a losing battle:-

Great work as always, Rich!
I must say, there is indeed a lot of text to read haha
Finnish magazine Pelit gave 1 a 92, and 2 an 88:

Gateway was rated as: ‘One of the best adventure games of 92. It will take up the remaining bits of your free time.’
Gateway 2 was criticized for having too many time-critical puzzles (like the start!), so you can’t just relax and figure things out, but have to save/die/load.

Wow, those are pretty good ratings!
The PDF here has a Gateway 2 review which doesn’t have a score but seems favorable overall. I didn’t even know this website existed. The ads alone really take me back.

While going down the CWG rabbit hole actually looking for Jill of the Jungle content, I noticed this ad in the July 1992 issue. I really don’t remember this game at all from when I was a child, but apparently I wasn’t paying attention.

Wow, they give away half the plot in this ad haha
