Has anyone played it via GZDoom or Zandronum?

Or used some of the HD Texture packs some modders have released? https://www.moddb.com/mods/heretic-hd-pbr

An alternative for modern systems, while keeping true to vanilla rendering, is Crispy Heretic (via the Crispy Doom project).

    – Enhanced 640×400 display resolution.
    – Widescreen rendering.
    – Uncapped frame rate.
    – Removal of static limits.
    – Mouselook.
    – Increased number of sound channels.
    – Brightmaps.
    – … and others!

I played through Heretic on GZ Doom a couple of years ago just fine. I’d played it a little bit back in the day but only shareware and wasn’t that impressed at the time.

Since then I purchased the game in a pack with Hexen on GOG. Really I just wanted to play Hexen which is why I bought the pack. However after playing through both of them I would say I enjoyed my time with Heretic more than Hexen.

Although Heretic is really just a doom reskin, it was still fun. Hexen had some serious level design issues. I could not stand the hub system and there was a lot of getting lost and not knowing where to go next that did not happen in Heretic.

I’ll probably play in Doomsday (jHeretic) before I play in it in GZDoom, but Crispy Heretic sounds good and closer to the origins.

IMO, GZDoom with an upscale pack is great! Though I used a neural upscale mod alone, not a fancy lighting+HD pack like the one you linked to.

Maybe try a few and see which one feels best to you?

Well, believe it or not but I’m actually going through E3 in the original engine via DOSBox. Having a good time so far, despite the low resolution!

I agree @dr_st, I enjoy the pixelated fun in DOSBox too!

FYI I also use the novert TSR which gives you better mouse control.

Oh, yes, it’s a lifesaver for anyone using the mouse. I play all my DOS 3D shooters keyboard only, although when I play the same games in a modern port, I use the same mouse+WASD setup as everyone. Go figure. šŸ˜€

Novert is a must! Iā€™m playing E1 on a retro PC + CRT monitor but plan to try out a few modern renderers for E2 and 3 so thanks for the tips in this thread!

Has anyone got crispy-heretic to work on macOS without having to compile it from source?
Brew install crispy-doom is not crispy-heretic it tells me when feeding it the WAD…

I’m using GZDoom for now but wanted to explore the crispy thing.

Edit: for GZDoom MacOS users: where is the save data and screenshot folder? Can’t find it šŸ™ƒ
