While researching our game of the month for the podcasts, I normally watch one or two retrospective / review-type videos on the game over on YouTube. This month for Gateway, I wanted to do the same thing, so I went over to youtube.com and searched for “gateway game”.

Turns out, except for some playthroughs and soundtrack videos, all the other videos are about the novels and none are about the game!

So I took it upon myself to correct this situation and make such a video myself.

Here’s the first work-in-progress version for you to preview: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YXqd8HfG_uU

[edit] The final version is now available: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qfB385CFN9E

It’s about 22 minutes in total and covers some background on how the game came to be, who was involved with its development and what the basic story outline is.

It purposely doesn’t go into details about the exact nature of the plot in parts 2 and 3, in an attempt not to give spoilers to people who might be interested in playing the game after having watched the video. I also tried to avoid showing any solutions to puzzles for the same reason.

This is my first video of this kind, so any feedback is more than welcome 🙂

I just watched it, great video! I found it very informative and it made great use of game cuts. That must have taken a lot of effort to put it all together.

If you don’t mind sharing what tools and techniques you used to create it, I’m definitely interested.

Thanks for checking it out! It was a little more work than I anticipated yeah, haha. I think an approximate metric is that 1 minute of video takes about 1 hour of work.

My process was to first write the script, record the narration of it, then record a whole bunch of gameplay footage and finally pick & choose appropriate scenes for the whole thing.

I’m not a video editor by any means and I don’t know how any of the professional tools work. Instead I used a Mac app called “ScreenFlow”, mostly because I already had it installed, as I occasionally use it for recording my desktop.

It offers a simple built-in editor which allowed me to put everything in order, so that’s what I used. This is what it looks like with the project loaded:
