In the recent podcast, conversation somehow steered towards Skyroads, and I realized that we haven’t covered this legendary DOS action game yet!

It’s a total classic – unique game mechanics, challenging gameplay involving intense action with elements of real-time puzzle solving, and totally addictive. One of those games that kids played on school PCs everywhere.

The best part? The original version (30 levels) and the Xmas special (30 more levels) have been made completely free by the developers back in the nineties, several years after the games were released:

I recently played this. It’s amazing how you need to mind the throttle in later levels. Great game!

I played this one back in the day and then again after getting my hands on a Pentium 2 a couple of years ago. I found the game to be as addictive and as fun today as it was in the past. And it is also harder than I remember: the amount of precision in the jumps and speed management about halfway through the game really ramps things up. Also, the fact that levels (as far as I know) have no checkpoints has been putting some stages out of reach for me.
And is it just me or X-Mas Skyroads is MUCH harder than the regular one?
I would love to listen to the team talking about this game!

It’s not just you. The X-Mas Skyroads levels are indeed much more difficult on average. The developers probably wanted to provide a fresh challenge to players who had mastered the original game.

With that said, the last level of the original Skyroads just _might_ be more difficult than any level in the X-Mas Special, sans maybe the last one again, but that would be only because the last level of Skyroads X-Mas relies on a single frustrating nearly impossible jump, which seems to be all too much luck-based. A gimmicky level and not one I enjoy…
