Perhaps for the next shooter you should consider Tekwar! A ‘true dog’ as the venerable Home of the Underdogs would describe it 😀 But despite the serious flaws I remember being impressed as a kid by the ‘real world’ setting and interactivity of the first level.
Never progressed beyond the start of level 2 though…

William Shatner yelling at you for doing your job is truly one of the more weird gaming experiences for sure!

I’ve heard the books are garbage too. Yet I can appreciate Shatner taking a risk and going outside his comfort zone. A part of me hopes someone mods or remasters it enough to make it fun.

All that said, may be fun to hate play just for kicks

I got the demo in the 90ies, IIRC, and actually bought the game later on, but never finished it. After I saw the suggestion here on the forums, I finally played it all the way to the end in August. 🙂

It’s quirky and feels quite a bit unfinished, but I wouldn’t say it’s a horrible game – it takes a while to get used to, though. And you really need to figure out some keyboard/mouse controls that you like and that allow you to move/aim really fast, because the default controls make it super hard to play. “wasd + mouse” wasn’t a thing yet at the time, was it?

The maps are pretty diverse, actually. City, park, beach, sewer, … The Matrix levels are probably the most controversial thing. In retrospect, I kind of liked the Matrix stuff, it is very futuristic and fancy (for its time), although very, very tough to play sometimes.

The weirdest thing is that you can pick up some objects and people and throw them around. It’s not a documented feature, probably a left-over from development, it doesn’t really serve a purpose.

I did play a lot of that Tekwar demo 🙂

I think the game needs to be put back in context. Somehow, I remember this demo to be extremely impressive. Wasn’t this before Duke Nukem 3D ? A sprawling city you could explore half-freely. For some reason, I mostly remember being able to take the subway.

I was very mad when Cyberpunk 2077 didn’t have a subway (now it has), I was very happy to see Deus Ex Mankind Divided had a subway.

I’m sure all these feelings root down to Tekwar.

Nowaydays ? After seeing Civiie’s video ? Well, I’m not sure it’d be fun to play but it’s clearly a game that could be a good conversation between podcasters 🙂
