The inspiration: Rollerball (1975)

There is a quite obvious inspiration for speedball 2 in “Rollerball” starring James Caan from 1975. The sport of Speedball is described to have become so violent the sport was forced underground and in Rollerball the game becomes more violent as the movie goes on.
The aestethics of Speedball is also very reminiscent of Rollerball down to the goal celebration graphic depicting a player in the same pose as James Caan when he celebrates the first goal in Rollerball!
