McKrackenParticipantMay 17, 2021 at 4:48 pm #4517Hey,
I’d like to suggest the “The Settlers” series. “The Settlers” was released in 1993, “The Settlers 2” in 1996.
I mainly played “The Settlers 2” at the time and it was the very first, real-time city-building / economics game for me. It had great, cute graphics and animations for the time and it was super fun building up your own little economy while avoiding to get overrun by your enemies.
Settlers 1 and 2 were released for MS-DOS. The full series consists now of eight or nine games.

May 23, 2021 at 9:36 am #4530He, I remember playing Settlers 2 with a friend and two mice on one PC. It was blowing my mind to find out that would work!
McKrackenParticipantMay 23, 2021 at 10:23 am #4533Didn’t know that was possible in Settlers 2. I always played alone.
How did that work though? Was it a split screen game? Must have been weird with the low resolution at the time.
May 23, 2021 at 10:27 am #4534Yep! Vertically split screen. Resolution wasn’t too bad, settlers supported at least 640×480, maybe even more, I don’t remember exactly.
Da9ParticipantFebruary 25, 2022 at 5:18 pm #5744I support this suggestion. Played Settlers 2 as a kid and still do. I recommend taking a look at http://www.siedler25.org so that you can adjust to a bigger resolution and even play online and keep the whole screen for yourself.
Love this game
secretchiefParticipantMarch 3, 2022 at 4:51 pm #5777Settlers 1 had amazing gameplay music!
pointerParticipantMarch 5, 2022 at 3:40 pm #5786Settlers 1 seems quaint now, but its “economic dependency tree” was really exceptional back then.
It was also very fun and satisfying to observe the little people perform activities specific to their role as they transformed resources into useful products.
Settlers 2 then improved on pretty much all aspects.
Evil TacoParticipantJuly 10, 2022 at 6:54 pm #6258Settlers 1 also had that split-screen multiplayer and I played that with a friend, it was pretty special!
killershrewParticipantFebruary 5, 2023 at 8:48 pm #7137Yes. I am shocked The Settlers hasnt been played yet! We need to butcher those little piggies!
fastwinstondoomParticipantMay 12, 2023 at 3:27 pm #7403Here’s another bump for Settlers, preferably the second game. Some people prefer the third game, there might be some real old school dudes that swear by the first… but to me Settlers II is the when the series peaked!
CasParticipantJuly 8, 2023 at 1:32 am #7658Hey! I would really love to see this one discussed in the podcast! I just posted a suggestion for it and didn’t realise it was already here!
fastwinstondoomParticipantSeptember 4, 2023 at 9:36 pm #7786Give us Settlers! Give us Settlers! Woooh! Wooooh!
neviceParticipantApril 14, 2024 at 11:44 pm #8587Another necro/bump for the Settlers! I actually recent re-played the 10th anniversary edition of Settlers 2, which is quite a nice remake. I remember buying the Gold Edition of Settlers 2 in the 90s, it had a pretty neat cut-out on the box art.
DosDudeParticipantJuly 14, 2024 at 10:09 pm #8873One of my favorite games ever! But so slow sometimes.
McKrackenParticipantJuly 19, 2024 at 8:29 am #8893Already three years since my original post and suggestion. Still would like to play this game again and listen to a podcast Episode from you guys.
bedivereParticipantSeptember 16, 2024 at 6:53 am #9028I played settlers 1 (or sometimes called serf city?) I played it with a friend, splitscreen on 320×200 (?). I have no idea how we managed to get anything done in this tiny screens.
Best city builder. It looks cute and child friendly. But the only goal is to exploid all the resources, build up an economy with mindless slaves and build a huge war mashine to exterminate all of your opponents.
fastwinstondoomParticipantJanuary 5, 2025 at 12:21 pm #9296Don’t mind me, just putting Settlers back on top where it belongs!
tinybirdParticipantJanuary 12, 2025 at 11:18 pm #9309Absolutely loved Settlers II as a kid, and still enjoy it a lot as an adult although it gets very slow and you can get soft-locked sometimes. Still would be great to play and discuss in the club. Would be good to hear some tips and stuff!
I’m curious about the other entries in the series. Is the original as fun? Do any later ones recapture that magic? I can’t say I was a big fan of the graphics in the later ones, although we had the 10th Anniversary edition and played that a bit.
