This was one of the first DOS games I ever played. My DOS origin story is an ex-work 286 my dad got in the early 90s. An IBM PS/2 no less, with model M keyboard… if only we still had it! It had a bunch of games on it, including this one.
I would have been between the ages of 5-9 while playing this, and basically learnt everything I know about golf from this and watching Tiger Woods break onto the scene in 1996.
All I really remember from this game was the commentary, which I found pretty funny at the time, especially since I wasn’t particularly good at it. Looking back, this game had remarkable pre-sound blaster sound implementation, delivering speech and other sound effects (birds chirping etc.) over the PC speaker. An upgrade over the bleeps and bloops for sure, but still quite harsh on the ears. Other than that, it’s a pretty standard EGA (I think?) offering, which I think is pretty cool for a game made in 1987 (same year as me!).
I revisited this game not that long ago. Funnily enough, I had no idea what it was called as it was just called ‘GOLF’ on the PC. It took a while scouring the internet to figure out, and when I play it I just couldn’t get the hang of it. I also found the sound quite irritating, so it didn’t last too long, but it gave me fond memories of playing PC games with my dad. I’ll have to let him know this is coming up in case he wants to shoot a few holes too!
TBH if it wasn’t for the golf game on the Nintendo Wii I doubt I would have ever played another Golf video game. Looking forward to exploring a few more in August though.
