fastwinstondoomParticipantShadowcaster just might be the most interesting “wolf3d clone” out there? I’ve never played it but the shapeshifting mechanic seems quite novel.
Them not even being the leads on most of the CoD projects just makes it all even more sad, really. Like Mike said, not everthing they made landed for everyone but I enjoyed most of their stuff. I had their game Mageslayer back in the late 90s, a sort of top down hack ‘n slasher… not the best game but I enjoyed the heck out of it.

fastwinstondoomParticipantI first played it in ’97 or ’98 and I loved it. Still one of my favorite games to this day.
I believe you needed a pretty high end pc(for the time) to run it when it came out and I imagine that hurt sales quite a bit.
fastwinstondoomParticipantAlso, it had swimmable water! WITH monsters in it. And fish, which you could catch for food using a fishing rod made from a stick and some thread 😀
fastwinstondoomParticipantYearly bump for taking a trip down to the Stygian Abyss!
fastwinstondoomParticipantHaven’t gotten around to playing it yet but back in the day it was Shark and Tiger all the way down for me! We’ll see if my taste has evolved over the last 25+ years…
fastwinstondoomParticipantHaving gone back over Easter to try to finish the game(at least the original episodes) I have come to the conclusion that Wolf3D is definitely best enjoyed in bite-sized chunks. Instead of trying to just power through it I did a level or two, saved, played some other games and then came back for another level. Really cut down on the feeling of repetetiveness.
Also really helped with my need to 100% everything since I remembered alot from my previous attempt this month(that’s how we did it back in the day after all, play something until it was burned into your brain). Like dr_st above I did not even try for the two crazy maze puzzles.
Finally, I really, REALLY would have enjoyed it even more if it had a Blake Stone-type automap in the hud!
All in all though, really happy the game was picked! I (eventually) had a blast playing it and even more just thinking about it, all the other games in the series and having a bit of a re-read of Masters of Doom. March was a good month <3
fastwinstondoomParticipantAhoy is a living legend!
…and Civvie is a an…aquired taste, I would say. But I like his stuff, he might be corny and over the top but he knows his shooters.
fastwinstondoomParticipantYou’re a stronger person than I Martli, the pursuit of secrets / 100% score in each level broke me. Think I got halfway in act 2 before I called it quits. The curse of my completionist personality…
fastwinstondoomParticipantThere is definitely some form of accuracy decrease at range but since it goes both ways it feels pretty fair to me. Enemies at long range seem to never hit and do piddly damage but if you get flanked by a SS dude at close quarters, man, you die fast.
fastwinstondoomParticipantPretty interesting how many incarnations of Wolfenstein there’s been over the years. Guess I should give the original a try too since I’ve played all the others…
fastwinstondoomParticipantI doubt Catacomb 3D will ever get its own episode so it would maybe be a good idea to talk abit about it on the Wolf3D episode. It is basically were ID tested out how to make their first person shooter games, right?
fastwinstondoomParticipantHonestly, I’ll make do with the LGR video on this subject 😀
fastwinstondoomParticipantDefinitely playing “the original” or at least the gog-version on dosbox. I only ever played the shareware back in the day and that was in ’95/’96. Played alot of the reboots over the years but never went back to the OG… gonna be a fun month!
fastwinstondoomParticipantI love me some Wacky Wheels but it’s kind of hard to believe it beat out NFS 😀 I see the proof tho!
fastwinstondoomParticipantI second the previous post, Shiny was/is a criminally overlooked developer! I think they only made 3 games for dos tho, EWJ1+2 and MDK. MDK is definitely in the weird and awesome category!
fastwinstondoomParticipantI cannot get into this at all. It is interesting to see this proto-civilization type game and I’m looking forward to learning more about it through the podcast but for me, with my addiction to more modern RTS-games, this is just too limited, and frankly, boring. I guess this is partly because I didn’t start pc gaming until the mid-90s and my first games were Warcraft 2 and C&C so I don’t even have any kind of nostalgia to lean on here.
More power to those of you who enjoy it, hopefully that’ll lead to some good conversations in the podcast 🙂
fastwinstondoomParticipant
fastwinstondoomParticipantSurprised that more people haven’t added their voices to this suggestion, this is probably on most top 5 rpgs-lists of games released in the 90s.
A month might not be enough for this game though, it is literally enormous! I think still the biggest singleplayer gameworld ever made?
fastwinstondoomParticipantBump for Earthworm Jim, might not be the best platformer of all time… but it sure is the coolest!
fastwinstondoomParticipantThis is definitely the most clunky part of DK1 but yes, Call to Arms is your best tool. You can power it up by holding down the mouse button when you drop it. It costs more but has a larger radius.
You can use the barracks to group up creatures, drop them in there, use the possession spell on one of them and the rest are supposed to follow you as you move about in first person. Dubious usefulness against the AI since they will just drop all their minions on you once you’re on their land.
Guard rooms do work, but they have to be a certain size and creatures will take breaks to sleep / eat / collect pay. Rarely use them but must be placed in a choke point to have any effect imo.
fastwinstondoomParticipantI can understand the game feeling repetetive for some people but for me it is one of the greatest games ever made. Digging out a nicely symmetrical dungeon, stocking up on gold, training up creatures and beating up rival keepers / invading heroes just never gets old. The hidden stuff in the levels is also really satisfying to find and will definitely give you a leg up on your enemies.
fastwinstondoomParticipantKeeperfx is definitely the way to go if you play this game regularly. I’m gonna go vanilla for january tho, for that true ’97 experience, annoying bugs and unimplemented features be damned 😀
fastwinstondoomParticipant*bump*
Definitely one of the coolest platformers of the 90’s, never owned the game but I played the demo to death!
fastwinstondoomParticipantBump for Tomb Raider, I feel like it pretty much set 3d platform / exploration games on the road to where we are today.
And yes, it kicked the hell out of my poor 120mzh 16mb ram machine at the time but then again I was 13 years old and frame rate didn’t seem so important back then!
fastwinstondoomParticipantGive us Settlers! Give us Settlers! Woooh! Wooooh!
fastwinstondoomParticipantOne of the more overlooked games of all time I think, totally overshadowed by Doom(which released less than a week after it). Definitely deserves its own episode!
fastwinstondoomParticipantHere’s another bump for Settlers, preferably the second game. Some people prefer the third game, there might be some real old school dudes that swear by the first… but to me Settlers II is the when the series peaked!
fastwinstondoomParticipantDK2 is only for windows sadly, so not really within the purview of the podcast. Though I agree, when I go back to play Dungeon Keeper these days it usually ends up being DK2.
fastwinstondoomParticipantWould love an indepth look at these games, I’ve watched various video essays on both the mechanics and the setting and it seems quite fascinating. Perhaps the coolest dnd-setting of them all. Would love a good reason to pick up and play them 🙂
fastwinstondoomParticipantThis was my “forever game” back when I was a young lad in the late 90’s, I just never grew tired of playing it. Played through it several times since then, would love to hear an in depth discussion about, in my biased opinion, Bullfrog’s greatest game!
fastwinstondoomParticipant
fastwinstondoomParticipantThe underworld games are a really do need an episode of their own, even if they were briefly mentioned in the ultima episode. It came out before Wolf3d and it is such a crazy technological achivement for the time… also, Warren Spector and Paul Neurath. The start of the immersive sim! Truly a milestone game.
