It seems like Epic had a lot of help from the demoscene back in this day, also considering how Future Crew had a pretty heavy hand in Epic Pinball. But yes, OMF2097 is probably the best fighting game for DOS.
OH MAN, this game. I actually had planned to do a Let’s Play of this many years ago, with full voice acting. I got about halfway done preparing it, aaaaaaand then life happened and I wasn’t able to finish.
This game’s a huge brain teaser, much like Cliff Johnson’s other game. I feel like it would take the entire community playing together if we were going to get through this without using a guide.
Fun fact: The source code for AlphaMan, a post-apoc roguelike from 1995, has just been released.
It looks like Soleau Software is no longer in operation. :/ Kind of sad. I’ve played a bunch of their games. If he’s no longer selling his games, someone should approach William Soleau and see if he’s willing to put them up somewhere for free.
[edit] I decided to look into when this may have happened. Looks like the last snapshot on the Wayback Machine of the site being active was November 12th, 2020. The next snapshot is on January 6th of this year, and the site was closed, so they probably shut down at the end of last year.
I remember back in the day messing around with stuff from a project called ABC: All BASIC Code. It’s mostly QuickBASIC stuff, and I think there’s some GW-BASIC and PDS (QB7) stuff in there too. There’s a complete dump of all the stuff from its nine(ish)-year run on GitHub. That would be a good place to start if we’re doing this.
I don’t feel like this game would really stand up as its own entire episode, but a general episode about falling block games would be fun.
Oh, man, Covert Action. I remember trying to stream this game several years ago. I’m not sure if it was me or if it was the game, but it seemed to get really nasty once you got a few Masterminds down. I’d be down for playing this game.
