DOSBox on RPi works fine. I have only RPi 3B+, which isn’t some massive powerhouse performance wise, but older games do work fine. For Quake tho use rather some source port, DOS version is out of the question ๐ I would assume, that RPi 4 would be much better, since you have A72 cores instead of A55, but I don’t have personal experience with it.
On mobile, I would definitely recommend Magic DOSBox, it’s regularly updated, and today’s mobile phones are powerhouses, which can run pretty much everything (my mid-range Pixel 4a is running Doom benchmark at 113 fps, which is more then plenty).
I’m not really sure to be honest, since there’s no changelog or release notes included in patches. But from my research and experience I know, that they somehow changed/upgraded its sound engine (DMX, also used in Doom) from 1.0 to 1.1, because on one of my (too modern) PC with ESS Solo-1 sound card the sound stops working, when using version 1.1 or 1.2, with only music still working. With 1.0, all is good. Fun fact, the same applies to mentioned Doom as well, therefore on that machine, I can only play Doom version 1.2, because from version 1.666 (the next non-shareware version after 1.2), the sound stops working for me as well.
Well, as I mentioned in the first DOTT thread, I’m all in for this episode!
Ok guys, for this, please count me in. Such a nostalgic memories, and also I do think, that I can add something regarding this game in podcast.
Yes please, I’m SO much for this!
Btw, Deadly Games had multi player ๐
But but… OpenXcom isn’t for DOS ๐
I have to correct yozy on that difficulty bug fix. Game is fixed ONLY in GOG version, not in Steam version.
Here are MD5 hashes for GEOSCAPE.EXE, which contains the bug:
GOG (fixed) – EC31EDCA56BC8AF5A32ECEE5F08471EB
Steam (bugged) – 33EA0819E6888F0450F9A1E5E19DC98BFile is located in you game directory, under UFOEXE subdir.
GOG version is therefore way to go (as it always is, since it’s DRM free ๐ ).
Since the topic is already here, I will post something and then…
Half-Life speed running on retro PC
Rebuilding a 1998 PC just to play Half-Life
A modder strung together eight 3dfx Voodoo 2 GPUs to play Half-LifeDune Legacy is open-source recreation of the Dune II game engine. Since its just game engine, you need to use original assets, but this is a good thing, since you get exact the same maps, units and everything game related. But on top of it, you’ll get unit multi-selection, support for bigger resolutions, (optionally) better AI and multiplayer! Also, you can change some rules in game in options, for example you can remove that buildings and units limit, if you want, and several others.
I don’t know about you guys, but after I recently played C&C, Warcraft 2 and (briefly) Warcraft 1, I must confess: Dune II it’s just too old and borderline unplayable for me. Even Warcraft 1 had (kind of) multi-select for units, but Dune II with its really old school one unit selection and keyboard order for every move or attack it’s just too much.
But there is light for non-masochist people, even though, it’s only available for modern OS (I know, blasphemy): Dune Legacy with multi-select and bunch other enhancements, but with all original asset files!
It’s announced!
We have decided to remaster Command & Conquer: Tiberian Dawn. And while this is incredibly exciting on its own, weโre also aware of how passionate the community is about the Red Alert universe. So, we will also remaster the original Command & Conquer: Red Alertโข. But what about the classic expansion packs you may ask – Covert Ops, Counterstrike, and Aftermath? Well, C&C and Red Alert wouldnโt be the same without them, so all three expansion packs will be bundled with the base games into one remastered collection – without microtransactions.
C&C Remastered Announcement from EA
Look Whoโs Coming Back for the Command & Conquer RemastersYeah, I beat the Human campaign yesterday too, in a epic race with Tijn! ๐
The difficulty through all of the campaign was quite low, with only few hiccups that I experienced during it (like in mission 10, where at one moment I ended up with just 2 peasants with red health, no money and no save). Last 2 missions had been finally at least moderately challenging, which was refreshing.
This game is definitely staying on my hard drive, I’m planing to return to it, since I never actually played the expansion (and before I started playing the game for this month I found out, that I have it in my collection) and because an about middle of game I somehow accepted various limitations, that makes me infuriating at the beginning (like requirement of farms and especially unit selection limit). I just can’t play any C&C in the mean time, because otherwise I would probably rage quit Warcraft in a big way ๐
